Launch of the Vilnius Summer Program in Yiddish 2009

The Vilnius Summer Program in Yiddish was opened on 26^th of July. This is the 28^th year of the Program and 11^th year in Vilnius. The program was founded by Professor Dovid Katz at Oxford in 1982 and relocated to Vilnius in 1998. Since 2001 the program has been an integral part of the Vilnius Yiddish Institute. The program has four courses in Yiddish language and literature, ranging from beginners (Yiddish I) to advanced (Yiddish IV).

This year the program’s faculty are Professors Hanan Bordin (Hebrew University of Jerusalem), Dov-Ber Kerler (Indiana University), Abraham Lichtenboim  (YIVO, Buenos Aires), Summer Program Director 2009 Anna Verschik (Tallinn University and University of Helsinky).

56 students came to study to Vilnius Summer Program in Yiddish this year. 6 are from France, 25 come from the US, Austria - 2, Lithuania - 5, Poland - 6, Germany - 4, Argentina - 1, United Kingdom - 3, Czech Republic - 1, Italy - 1, and Finland - 1.
