Itche Goldberg, 102
Stalwart Yiddish editor and cultural leader Itche Goldberg passed away several months short of his 103rd birthday at his home in New York City on 27 Dec. 2006. He has been a close mentor and friend to the faculty of the Vilnius Yiddish Institute and its summer program, and was a frequent guest during the earlier years of the program at Oxford. Two extensive tributes to Itche were penned by Dovid Katz during the last year, one emphasizing Itche’s earlier life, and the second more in a retrospective spirit, during the master’s last months. The VYI’s official tribute appeared in the Algemeyner zhurnál in New York (facsimile at right). In the photo below, Dovid Katz’s last meeting with Itche Goldberg, in Manhattan, in Nov. 2004.
