Library and Archives

The Vilnius Yiddish Institute offers to students, researchers, and interested visitors a library of over 5000 books assembled thanks to a major donation from the Yung Yiddish library of Jerusalem. Additional gifts have been received from the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research (New York), the National Yiddish Book Center (Amherst, Massachusetts) and Yiddish of Greater Washington.

Our librarian, Fania Brantsovsky, a survivor of the Vilna Ghetto, who escaped on the day of its liquidation in September 1943, is currentlyFania Brancovskaja cataloging the collection. She will be pleased to help you in your research.

The Vilnius Yiddish Archive is a collection of hundreds of hours of video films. It keeps alive the memories and the rich Yiddish language and cultural heritage of the last Yiddish speakers in Lithuania, Belarus and Poland whom Professor Dovid Katz has interviewed over the past decade. The process of digitalization of these archives has now begun, thanks to a generous grant from the Rothschild Foundation (Europe, London).
